Blog 3- Character

This clip is from the movie Beast of the Southern Wild-- the story of a young girl and her fathers survival in the poorest part of  New Orleans' swamps. Hushpuppy is the name that the young girl goes by and her father has called her pretty much her whole life. Living in the swamps is a tough trial and tribulation to go through, as shown and described very well in the movie. The clip shows the idea of a fancy dinner as they typically do not eat very healthy.  Her father, well aware that he will soon be passing away due to sickness, tries to teach his daughter everything he knows, even the challenging things to get her prepared for living on her own. If you cant imagine such a life-- poor shelter, poor diet and human life, you certainly will be able to after watching the Beast of the Southern Wild.

This is one of my favorite characters ever depicted in a movie. If feel like the character Hushpuppy was developed so well. She shows strength and determination throughout the entire movie and specifically in this scene. As you can see, it is obvious that little Hushpuppy want's to be exactly like her father, which is quite a common characteristic of young girls growing up with only their dads. She looks up to her father and adores him, which is a feeling I can relate to. Though it seems like a simple task : to crack open the shell of a crab leg, it is actually very hard to do with bare hands and at that age. It is a true test to her not only physical strength, but her emotional and mental strength that is needed to survive in this swamp world she lives in. In the movie, the audience is well aware of the disease the father has gotten recently.  When he dies we are not worried for Hushpuppy because of the toughness and determination that she has shown throughout the movie. Her scream at the end of the task to break the crabs the way her father wants her to shows that she believes in herself and knows she can do anything, which is an essential part to the character she plays in the movie.
